Education Workgroup: Early Childhood Development: An Overlooked Economic Development Tool

Jun 30 2008 - 12:00pm
Jun 30 2008 - 2:00pm

Please join SID Washington’s Education for Development Workgroup for a presentation on early care and education projects as a tool for stimulating economic growth in foreign assistance packages.

Early care and education are vital components of economic development programs and economic growth, but they are often overlooked. Research shows that the return on investment on quality, targeted early childhood development (ECD) programs can be as high as 16 percent or more. Yet little progress has been made in meeting the Education for All goal to “expand and improve comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.”

This session will address current ECD projects being delivered by the US international development community and the need to include more early childhood projects in US foreign assistance packages.

Presenters include:

Chloe O’Gara, Associate Vice President, Education, Save the Children

Joan Lombardi, Research Professor, Public Policy Institute, Georgetown University

The event will be moderated by Laura Oldanie, Program Manager, Committee for Economic Development
