Summer Internships Currently Available:

 

The Society for International Development (SID), a not-for-profit founded in Washington, D.C. in 1957, is a global forum of individuals and institutions concerned with sustainable economic, social, and political development.  SID currently has members in 125 countries and over 65 local chapters worldwide – with the largest chapter in Washington, D.C.  It works with more than 100 associations, networks, and institutions involving academics, parliamentarians, students, political leaders, and development experts, both at the local- and international- levels.  This makes SID one of the very few organizations that has a holistic, multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral approach to development and social change.

Taking full advantage of its location in the financial and policy capital of the international development community, SID-Washington is the most active chapter worldwide and is often referred to as the flagship of the organization.  SID-Washington is committed to three principal objectives:
1)    Stimulate dialogue and cooperation on global development
       issues
2)    Enhance skills, knowledge and understanding among
       development practitioners
3)    Provide a network for individuals and organizations working in
       various sectors of international development

A leading knowledge broker, SID-Washington achieves its mission as a forum for the development community through a newsletter, workgroups, and special programs and events. The SID-Washington Chapter has nearly 1,000 individual members including foreign service officers, U.S. government officials, economists, development practitioners from multilateral organizations and non-governmental organizations, technical specialists, members of the diplomatic community, and academics.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
•    Assist in program development, such as with Chapter Programs
     featuring high-level panelists, workgroup programs, and Annual
     Conference and Annual Dinner;
•    Serve as a liaison with SID-Washington's more than 20 sectoral
     and regional workgroups;
•    Write about the Chapter’s programs and workgroups activities
     for publications such as Development Connections, the Chapter's
     newsletter;
•    Assist with general office duties including: developing outreach
     materials and website; adding to and maintaining our database;
     planning and execution of events; General administrative duties
     (including answering phones, handling mail, drafting
     correspondence, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student or recent
     graduate;
•    Academic and/or work experience in international development;
•    Excellent written and oral communications skills;
•    Very strong organizational skills;
•    Possess initiative and the ability to work independently and as
     part of a small team;
•    Computer Skills (Word, Excel, Internet Research, etc.);
•    Strong interpersonal skills;
•    40 hour minimum commitment per week, every day preferred;
•    Minimum 3-month commitment.

Start date: May 1 2008.
