Changing Demographics of the Middle East and North Africa: Youth Bulge and Its Regional Implications

Mar 8 2007 - 12:30pm
Mar 8 2007 - 2:00pm

The Middle East Workgroup invites you to a discussion with Farzaneh Roudi, Project Director for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the Population Reference Bureau (PRB).  Ms. Roudi will discuss demographic trends and population policies in the MENA region, with a special focus on youth bulge and Iranian population policies.

Despite MENA’s wealth of oil resources and significant improvements in health and education over the past few decades, the region’s political, social, and economic systems have not evolved in a manner that has enabled the region to effectively meet the changing needs of its rapidly growing young population.  Ms. Roudi will provide an overview of the demographics of youth and their implications for human and economic development in the region.  The discussion will also include a special look at Iranian population policies and the implementation of its successful family planning program, which stands out from its regional neighbors and among Islamic countries.

During her career as a population and policy information analyst, Ms. Roudi initiated the PRB’s Population and Development Program in MENA and collaborated with various NGOs in the region.  Ms. Roudi has a MA in demography from Georgetown University, with additional graduate study in demography at the University of California at Berkeley.
