Please join SID-Washington’s Latin America/Caribbean Regional Roundtable as we kick-off the new year with a special event focused on the critical questions that we face as a community on how to rebuild U.S. relations with the rest of the hemisphere. What needs to be done to re-energize U.S. policy in the Americas? How can the deep strains in Inter-American relations best be addressed? What are the first steps to renewing relationships of trust within the hemisphere?

Various analyses, including peer country comparisons and simple regression analysis can be easily conducted and used to support policy discussions and decisions. This session will also explore broader issues and implications with respect to allowing policymakers, donors, researchers, and others perform real-time analysis of large and complicated data sets via the web.

Please join SID-Washington's security and development workgroup and Africa regional roundtable for this co-sponsored discussion.

The establishment of a new Africa Command (AFRICOM) has generated optimism about the possibilities to address security and development challenges in Africa while at the same time creating concerns about a "U.S. militarization" of the continent. This roundtable will highlight AFRICOM's agenda, both near and long term, its rationale and hopes, as well as recommendations that others have made to improve its operations and the reasons why some have opposed the initiative.

Featured Panelists:

Theresa Whelan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs
See her August 2 testimony to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs at

Please join SID-Washington’s Environment Workgroup for a discussion on how to scale-up activities to cover geographic areas and populations that can make a real difference.  SCALE - System-wide Collaborative Action for Livelihoods and the Environment - has proven to be promising methodology for achieving results at scale in a short timeframe. Developed from the lessons learned from the thirteen-year, thirty-country experience of the USAID Environmental Education and Communication Project (GreenCOM), SCALE is a system-wide social change framework, participatory management process, and set of tools that interweave governance, economic, environmental, and social interests in a way that manages and conserves resources while creating new economic opportunities.
