SID-Washington is proud to present this chapter event on technology and development.

For many years, development has been associated with a model where large loans and projects are negotiated between donor agencies and governments in developing countries.  Now, with the advance of information and communications technology, this model is being challenged.  The increasing prevalence of mobile phones, the internet, and online social networks is allowing new players (NGOs, voluntary associations and individual citizens) to not only voice their views but contribute their own time and money directly towards the development priority of their choice --- all without the need for donors or government agencies.

Improving the Quality of Education For All:
Quality Indicators for Students, Schools, and School Systems

The 2005 Global Monitoring Report for EFA highlighted poor student performance in many primary education systems that have expanded under EFA.  The EFA-Fast Track Initiative has formed a Quality of Learning Outcomes Task Team and a recent evaluation took the World Bank to task for insufficient attention to learning. This focus on learning outcomes has led to a new demand for quality indicators at the primary school level.  Two two-hour workshops will introduce participants to some of these school and learning quality indicators and will provide an opportunity to discuss their application in their own settings.  The first hour of each workshop will feature a panel of experts, each describing a different indicator.  During the second hour, workshop participants can join small group discussions about the application of each indicator.

Please join SID-Washington's Development Information Workgroup for a presentation on the World Computer Exchange.

The World Computer Exchange (WCE) is a global education and environment nonprofit helping to connect youth in 65 developing countries to the skills, opportunities and understanding of the Internet - while keeping used, working computers out of landfills.

WCE initiatives include:

  • What makes a good computer donation program
  • How volunteers and university groups help WCE Partners by testing, installing, and networking donated computers (and training those in developing nations to maintain the computers over time)
  • E-Waste recycling:  Creating learning opportunities and advocacy programs
  • Opportunities to partner with WCE

Come explore how you might use WCE's successful grassroots collaborative model for your own ICT projects (and related work) in developing nations.
