WCE initiatives include:

  • What makes a good computer donation program
  • How volunteers and university groups help WCE Partners by testing, installing, and networking donated computers (and training those in developing nations to maintain the computers over time)
  • E-Waste recycling:  Creating learning opportunities and advocacy programs
  • Opportunities to partner with WCE

Come explore how you might use WCE's successful grassroots collaborative model for your own ICT projects (and related work) in developing nations.

SID-Washington's Africa Workgroup, in cooperation with the Governance, Corruption, Rule of Law Workgroup, invites you to a discussion on the impact of the media in mitigating or contributing to election violence in Africa.

For decades the media has had a powerful influence on the outcome of elections in Africa.  This power has been used for good by increasing transparency and accountability of political candidates and elections and has been used for evil by manipulating election results and exploiting existing tensions resulting in post-election violence and strife.  This can most recently be seen in the post-election results of Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Please join us for May's Chapter event on the reform of U.S. foreign assistance attracting increasing discussion within the development community.  House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) recently stated, “It is painfully obvious to Congress, the administration, foreign aid experts, and NGOs alike, that our foreign assistance program is fragmented and broken and in critical need of overhaul.”

While it appears there is a growing consensus that foreign assistance should be more efficient to meet foreign policy challenges, there does not appear to be a consensus on how to address the issue?  Should the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 be rewritten?  Should USAID be made a cabinet level agency?  What needs to occur to have better inter-departmental collaboration amongst the various agencies providing foreign aid?
