Betsy Bassan

Betsy Bassan has served as Senior Vice President for the International Health Group at Chemonics International since November 2000. Ms. Bassan is a development planner and senior management specialist with 20 years of experience designing and managing development activities across a broad array of technical areas and geographic regions. Sector experience includes health, private sector development, environment, democracy/governance, and PVO/NGO development. Regional experience includes Europe and Eurasia (E&E), Middle East, and Africa. After joining Chemonics in 1991, Ms. Bassan has held several positions, leading the development of new markets including bringing the firm's E&E division to record growth. Ms. Bassan now leads a new unit, the International Health Group, which seeks to broaden Chemonics’ work in health. She has also served as Project Director for a major USAID initiative to increase PVO/NGO capacity in family planning, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and to provide services through networks; and led a global review of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. She has lived and worked in Kenya and Sudan, carrying out numerous consultancies and long-term assignments for a wide range of organizations in strategic planning, activity design, project management, and institutional development. She speaks fluent French and holds an M.A. from Columbia University where she completed a joint degree program (Planning in Developing Nations) in the School of International Affairs and the Division of Urban Planning.
